Here are observations from Ethan’s day. It’s our second day of keeping track and we’re finding it a great way to have some dialogue and reconnect at the end of the day. Ethan also seems to be enjoying the process, as he gets to talk about some of the things he did during the day.
Morning
Reading: Dog Man – A Tale of Two Kitties and Big Nate on the Kindle. ~35 minutes
Completed Gr. 1 to 3 workbook activities.
Had brunch, then played at the Ambleside playground and beach for about an and a half. Ethan played with other children at the water park sand box. He waited patiently and let the younger kids play with the water and sand. Ethan talked to another child about being nice to the younger kids. When playing with the other kids, he offered ideas and suggestions for games and how to play together.
Made a game at the beach that he played with his mom. They made a small mound of sand and placed a stick into the top of the mound. Then they took turns taking away sand until the stick fell. The person who made the stick fall, loses the game.
Afternoon
After lunch he worked on the computer for 1 hour and 40 minutes: Algodoo, Scratch, chess and typing practice.
On Algodoo, he made a set of gears that moves marbles around a conveyor belt.
On Scratch, he continued to work on his dancing cat. He added an extra movement to the cat and composed new music.
Here he’s talking about how Algodoo works and how he programmed the character to dance in Scratch:
He played online chess and started learning how to type using a BBC website called Bitesize. He did several of the exercises but found it boring, repetitive and not challenging because they didn’t practice with real words.
We read Dog Man Unleashed on the Kindle.
Evening
Went swimming and played in the pool for about an hour.
He listened to the Wow in the World and told us that bees don’t sleep.
Now Ethan has something to say (again)
