Home Learning Journal January 11, 2018 – Another Haircut & Fibonacci is a Blockhead

Another day, another haircut? Well, sort of. The day started with Ethan getting into his studies first thing in the morning, which has slowly become a bit of a habit. We think this is great and we know that Ethan appreciates having more time for himself if he gets his school work done.

Ethan actually did some prepositions worksheets already but I needed to check them. It was nice to see how much he’s improved in recognizing prepositions.

While I checked his grammar, Ethan was making his own math questions to solve. He’s still really into long division so that was the focus for him again today.

He also checked out a YouTube video to help him learn other ways of doing long division.

And he spent some time checking out a new math book we got from the library.

Another haircut????

Yep, another haircut… But this time, it was Dong Eun who wanted Ethan to give her a trim. He did a great job brushing her hair before taking off about an inch from the ends.

Ethan’s job

Ethan was asked to check the mail for a neighbour, which we thought was a great way for him to have some responsibility.

Fibonacci time

We’ve been wanting to find books that the Charlotte Mason homeschoolers call “living books,” books that feature stories, rather than facts. So it was great to find a kind of biography about Fibonacci and how he saw numbers everywhere, particularly in nature. The book’s title, “Fibonacci is a Blockhead,” made it fun to discover why he was called a blockhead.

This led to some online exploration to learn more about Fibonacci. Ethan was particularly fascinated by Fibonacci’s work with rabbits.

Games

No, not the kind you play on your phone or PlayStation, but good old board games or card games. Ethan loves games so he really liked going through the games in a games book we borrowed at the library.

And that was Ethan’s day. It seemed to have a more organic flow to it, which felt pretty good. Tomorrow night we have a phone call scheduled with Ethan’s SelfDesign Learning Consultant, so we’re all looking forward to speaking with her.
