Today, on this third semi-official day of unschooling, we spent about an hour and a half at the beach playground. The BC Ministry of Education says that kids who are home schooled are required to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. I can see how easy it would be to just hang out at home, especially since Ethan’s an only child, so there is definitely some conscious effort needed to ensure he gets out and plays.

The rest of the day went something like this…

August 30, 2017

Morning

Ethan asked why his mom was in pain and his mom talked about women’s menstrual cycle and why it happens. While doing his workbooks, he asked about where Brazil is.

We talked about cheap flights to Paris that have a layover in Iceland. Ethan was also reading about Iceland in his workbook, so we took out a world map and found Iceland.

Ethan asked what the most expensive flight is and we Googled that. Found out the most expensive flight is Etihad Airways of the UAE, with a one way ticket costing US$30,000.

We went to the playground and played for about an hour and a half until lunchtime.

Afternoon

After lunch, Ethan worked on the computer, upgrading the marble machine he made in Algodoo. Worked on Scratch on the cat project. Worked on typing and played chess online.

He also made some upgrades to his labyrinth game to keep the marbles from hitting the floor. He added the tray and turned that part into a part of the game.

He turned the sofa into a fort.

Evening

Demonstrated what he made in Algodoo and showed us how some functions in Scratch work. He also demonstrated his new typing skills.

Ethan added a key, pin pad and card to get into his fort.

Before bed, Ethan asked Dong Eun why she was in pain and she talked about a woman’s menstrual cycle and why it happens. She talked about how a woman’s body releases an egg and that if it is not fertilized by a man’s sperm, the egg is released through the menstrual cycle.

Then Ethan asked if she would have another baby, and Dong Eun asked if he’d like a younger brother or sister. He said he’s 50/50 because he doesn’t want to share his toys. But on the other hand, he’d have someone to play with so he liked that. He changed his opinion to 70/30 in favour of a baby brother or sister. Ethan then mentioned how he’d be 16 years old by the time the baby is 8, like he is now.

Now Ethan has something to say:
