Today was day 4 of our home learning journey. As I document each day that Ethan is a home schooler on a sort of unschooling path, it’s important for me to remember to stay out of my own head and look at things objectively. It’s also been a good opportunity to practice some of those things I read about in all those books about talking to your kids and discipline.
The rhythm of the day always fluctuates and it’s important to be aware of how Ethan’s energy is when we’re doing different activities. When he’s a bit low on energy, it’s probably more due to his enthusiasm towards an activity, so it’s something we need to pay attention to. For example, he’s been keeping a daily journal since we started making daily observations but tonight was a bit of a struggle to get it done. The other days he seemed more into it, but tonight he was less enthused.
Anyway, here’s a recap…
Morning
Ethan woke up and read “Diary of Steve the Noob 25” on the Kindle for around 30 minutes.
Then he worked on his Gr. 1 to 3 workbooks. He did sections on Canada, and one of the topics was about life in Vancouver.
After breakfast, he made some confetti from scrap paper but stopped after a while because it was a lot of work. He also made a paper fortune teller.
He made an addition to his marble labyrinth game.
He watched some YouTube videos about origami ninja stars and other objects.
We then went to the playground for an hour and a half. Ethan loves the water fountain activity there and spent time playing with several other children. Later on, he spent the rest of the time there playing with another boy. They made wet sand balls and were hiding them around the playground.
Afterwards, we had to go the store to pick up something but Ethan was reluctant to go. It was most likely because he was tired and didn’t want to shop. He was grumpy and hungry, so he wasn’t happy about having to go shopping.
Afternoon
After lunch, Ethan worked on the computer, doing his usual Algodoo, Scratch and chess.
Ethan made a modification to his fort by simplifying the entry.
He watched more videos about origami and made a three point ninja star. He was searching for cool designs and came across the ninja star.
He also learned how to fold a napkin into a cool design.
He read Tom Gates Top of the Class, then watched some videos about iPhone hacks. He learned about how to use the earbud volume control to take a picture, how to make a case from a balloon and how to make a macro lens using a drop of water on the phone’s camera. Took a couple selfies, too 🙂
Evening
Ethan helped make his dinner tonight. We had a combination of curry, rice and noodles, but Ethan was having some eggs, tomatoes and sausage (which we’ve decided to let him have when he feels like it, but in moderation). He has helped with cooking in the past so it was good to get him doing it again.
After dinner, he wrote in his journal about the day’s events and showed us what his “cute face” is 🙂
