Yesterday, we had an amazing time in Old Quebec. Today, we wanted to go back to have a picnic on top of the hill outside the citadel and enjoy a view of the Fairmount and the walled city. The day also became a day of misplacing a treasured item and gratitude.

Video to come!

Morning

Dong Eun has done such an amazing job with managing our food, that we have been able to eat what we had left without wasting anything. The only thing remaining was some Costco roast chicken from last night and we wanted to save that to make sandwiches for lunch.

So we went to Costco to buy bread and a few other grocery items to stock up. But without any breakfast, we debated whether poutine would be an appropriate meal, instead. Of course, it shouldn’t be… but we decided that for today, it would! Absolutely zero complaints from Ethan, and the Costco poutine was big and delicious.

We also managed to find some great bread that was made without preservatives or additives to balance out the poutine breakfast.

Afternoon

It was time to go back to the Plaines D’Abraham, park in the free 60 minute parking and check out the view. The leaves in Quebec have been a sight to behold. Everywhere we look, it’s beautiful.

After parking, and as we were getting ready, Ethan found something to do to entertain himself, as he’s been doing the entire trip. In this case, it was collecting some flowers and playing on the grass.

One thing that Dong Eun observed is that since Ethan has almost no toys with him, other than a couple of Rubik’s Cubes, he seems to be appreciating what he has and being grateful for those things. He is also always saying thank you to Dong Eun almost every night. We think that he might be more grateful for little things and experiences, rather than the material things he was so used to having around back home. We’ll see.

On the way to the view point, Ethan picked some flowers for Dong Eun. He’s always doing little things like this for his mom, which is really sweet.

When we got to he view point, we noted that the view was actually better at night. But it was still nice to enjoy some lunch and watch Ethan roll around on the grass. We had a can of pop and Ethan used the empty can as a toy to roll down the hill.

One funny thing that happened is that a crowd of Korean tourists suddenly came up to the view point, too. They were there because this was the spot that was featured in a Korean drama. Suddenly, we were surrounded by people snapping selfies and group shots. But they disappeared shortly thereafter, being ushered off to their next destination.

Our parking time was soon coming to an end, so we made our way back to Juju Jr. Once back at the van, Ethan found a ladybug and wanted a picture of it.

We decided to drive around the park, as that was also the way out. On the way, Ethan needed to go to the bathroom. We found one and after Ethan did his business, he was carving a stick with his Leatherman tool. After we left, we went down by the river and Ethan wanted to do more carving.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t find his Leatherman. We had heard a noise like something had fallen while driving but couldn’t figure out it was. We searched the entire van and even went back to the bathroom to look. Nada.

Ethan was disappointed, as the loves his Leatherman. He’s normally very careful with it and we think it’s still in the van. But it was a good lesson in securely putting away things and in non-attachment to things. But we definitely want to find it!

The area by the river was also very nice. Ethan and I threw rocks into the water, aiming for a large rock, while Dong Eun picked up rocks that were supposed to be in the rock garden and put them back.

We noticed that the rocks along the shore were quite unique; pieces were splitting off and creating flat pieces.

Now it was time to leave Quebec City and try to get to New Brunswick as we continue the drive across Canada. Our next destination will likely still be in Quebec because Fredericton, NB, is too far for us. And why hurry when the rest stops are this nice.

Evening

We made it to Riviere Du-Loup to spend the night and noticed something odd… They had a bank of Tesla Superchargers. We thought it was strange and thought that perhaps there was something special about this place that we didn’t know about.

Discovering what it was will have to wait, as we needed dinner, which was pasta we bought from Costco. We needed some other veggies and fruit, and Dong Eun did a great job digging up deals at Walmart.

She got mushrooms, broccoli, strawberries, a box of spinach and some peaches for a grand total of $7.33. Yea! Unbelievable. The Costco chicken we had last night cost $7.99!

And this particular Walmart had about 10-12 RVs and motorhomes in the parking lot. Normally, there might be zero or a few, but never this many.

After dinner, Ethan taught me how to make a bullet journal. It was fun and Ethan was such a great teacher.

While walking back from the bathroom, one of our neighbours talked to me and said that he and his wife are from Fort St. John in northern BC. So it was nice having a conversation with someone from back home.

They’ve been on the road since May but spent 4 months with their son in Toronto. It was their first major trip and they were having a great time, too.

Tomorrow, we explore Riviere Du-Loup and then head toward Fredericton.

If you’re just reading this blog for the first time, we are a family of three traveling across Canada (and likely beyond) in a 1994 VW Westfalia camper van called Juju Jr. Our son Ethan, age 9, is unschooling and so we want him to learn from being on the road and traveling. So he’s also now a roadschooler and we are documenting the trip and his learning on this blog.
