With our home learning, we are also doing the observations on the weekends since learning happens everyday and we’re trying to keep track of what Ethan’s doing on a daily basis. He has been writing in his journal and it seems like he’s improving his ability to reflect on his day. He is mostly recapping what he did in a general way, so we’re asking him to fill in some of the details to make more complete sentences. Everyone’s version of unschooling and home learning is going to be different and a bit of an exploration into what will work best.
Morning
Read Big Nate and Dog Man on the Kindle when he woke up.
Talked about how to keep an apple from turning brown. Ethan watched a YouTube video yesterday that taught how to do it and he explained it to me this morning. He said that if you cut an apple into a tic-tac-toe pattern and spray it with lemon juice, it will stay fresh for 8 hours. You have to cut the pattern from the top of the apple. He mentioned that it’s safer to cut if you turn the apply upside down. You can also tie it back together with an elastic and that will keep the apple fresh for a longer time, too.
Afternoon
After lunch, he went out to play at the playground. It was hot, so we only stayed out for about half an hour.
We also worked on planning a road trip. Ethan helped look up places on a map.
Worked on upgrading his marble machine in Algodoo.
In Scratch, made a cat change colour.
He also played chess online, then did some more reading on the Kindle.
Evening
Watched videos about origami and learned how to make a different fidget toy. Made 3 of them and taught me how to make one. We watched the video together and he explained each step to me.
