On the weekends, we’re trying to combine both days because we probably don’t do as much as on weekdays. That being said, we like doing these daily observations because we feel that it would be a challenge to remember things that happened during the week.
Saturday 9/9
Just about every morning, Ethan wakes up and picks up either his Kindle or a book. Today, it was a book: Roald Dahl’s “The Witches.”
Most of the day was spent doing family things with Ethan’s grandparents and my sister, who is in town visiting. We also went grocery shopping at Costco and didn’t use a shopping cart, so there was a lot more walking for Ethan than usual.
We went to the library in the afternoon to pick up some books that Ethan had been wanting, in particular, books about making things from clay and books on origami. The clay books were a big hit, as he spent most of the late afternoon and evening working on different clay projects.
We also borrowed several documentary DVDs from the library, including Planet Earth 2, which we watched with Ethan after dinner. He loves nature documentaries, whether it’s about animals or the weather.
Another of his favourites is Bill Nye the Science Guy. He has watched almost all of the episodes that they have at the library.
Sunday 9/10
On Sunday morning while having breakfast, Ethan was asking if Dong Eun wanted a banana. She said no, so Ethan asked if she wanted half a banana. We started playing a game of asking if she’d like smaller and smaller portions, and we used fractions to describe the portions. We decided to ask Ethan to cut up the banana and actually try dividing it up while also describing each cut as a fraction.
So from half a banana we went to a quarter, 1/8th, 1/16th, 1/32nd, all the way to 1/2048th. He was really into this and loved cutting the banana into smaller and smaller portions. Yes, he did end up eating most of the banana. I think he had half 🙂
After breakfast, he tried making an origami rocket following the directions from the book. He asked for some help with one section because the instructions were a bit tricky. He was slightly discouraged by how difficult one of the folds was, so we talked about how failing fast and repeatedly would help us get to a solution that much quicker. We did eventually figure out what to do.
In the afternoon, his cousins came over and we went to the school playground for about 45 minutes. We then came home and hit the pool for just over an hour.
One of Ethan’s cousins made a pinball game out of cardboard and Ethan later made one for himself. He talked about making a pinball game a few days ago so this was perfect timing.
And that was the weekend. Several learning opportunities presented themselves and we are getting the hang of encouraging Ethan to take the learning deeper, such as with the banana and fractions.
