Today was the North Shore Home Learners Group’s annual “Not Back to School Day Picnic” and we all went there to meet some of the other families. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it was a great experience, as there were many more families there than I thought there would be. It was fantastic to see that so many families are also homeschooling their children right here on the North Shore. Afterwards, Ethan had quite a full day…
Morning
When Ethan woke up, he did his usual reading. This morning, it was a Minecraft comic book on the Kindle.
Before breakfast, we all went out for a short jog along Ambleside Beach. Ethan wasn’t too thrilled about going out so early, but he had a good time once we got going.
After breakfast, we all went out to Cates Park in North Vancouver for the annual North Shore Home Learners Group “Not Back to School Day Picnic.”
When we first arrived, we noticed three women with yarn spinners sitting on the grass. Ethan was curious what they were doing so we went over to say hi. The three ladies explained how they were making yarn and how it was a skill that was taught to boys and girls in Europe many years ago. We also learned about how they can make yarns of different colours.
It was fascinating to see and Ethan was genuinely interested in what they were doing because he had asked about learning how to knit before.
The picnic was a lot of fun. There were quite a lot of families there that we talked to and Ethan played with a friend he knew, along with a few other boys.
Afternoon
We went to Lonsdale Quay for fish and chips and soup. They also have a giant chess set, so Ethan and Dong Eun played a quick match after lunch.
After lunch, we came home and Ethan wanted to get some cardboard to do some projects with. We went to the cardboard dumpster outside our building and found some big pieces of cardboard.
Ethan made a marble maze game by cutting pieces of cardboard and hot glueing them together to form a box. He then cut up some straws and glued them into the box to make a maze. He continued adding elements to the maze, such as holes where the marble could fall through.
Evening
After dinner, we watched a little bit of a documentary about how children in different parts of the world go to school.
We then worked on the learning plan slides by adding some photos and information about Ethan. Ethan participated in this and we will work together over the coming days to complete the plan.
He was quite tired from playing at the picnic and wanted to go to bed early after finishing his daily observation with me. Before getting ready for bed, he cleaned up the kitchen table where he was doing some of his work.
