With unschooling, we sometimes wonder if Ethan needs more instruction or if he needs additional guidance with certain topics, such as math. But today, he surprised us when he was doing some practice with adding and subtracting fractions.

I printed out some adding and subtracting fractions questions, along with some instructions for how to add and subtract them. He might have already known how to do it, but he read the instructions on his own and then completed the questions.

He takes the same approach of learning on his own for just about every task that he enjoys doing, or is somehow motivated to do. I guess that’s a good thing when you’re a home learner and are supposed to be following an unschooling method.

Morning

When Ethan woke up today, he wrote three comic books. They are part of a series he’s been writing called “Adventures of the Box.” He’s now written six books and isn’t done, yet! 🙂

We went out for walk this morning and Ethan rode his bike. We went down to Ambleside Beach and Ethan rode his bike at the skate park. He loves riding around the skate park.

When we got home, Ethan did the multiplication questions I wrote for him, practiced the two and three times tables, and learned an easy way to multiply two digit numbers with two digit numbers. He also practiced adding and subtracting fractions.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, he learned some new origami from YouTube. We’re running low on origami paper, so he is reusing the completed pages from his Grade 1-3 workbooks.

He also filmed a new video about the marble maze game he made and published it to YouTube…

Later on, he went to the school playground to meet one of his friends and he was there for about two hours.

In the evening after dinner, he read a couple of new books from the library called “Bedtime Math” and “First Folks and Vile Voyageurs.”

Evening

After dinner, he wrote in his bullet journal and also wrote his daily observation. After, he wrote a new blog post and updated his homepage.
