Today didn’t even feel like a Monday. In the past, Monday would be like it is for most people but with Ethan unschooling, we don’t feel the rush of the new week anymore. It’s amazing.

Our unschooling and home learning journey will be quite a bit different starting this week. We are embarking on a cross Canada road in our trusty VW Westfalia that Ethan named Juju Jr. after his favourite stuffed animal. We will likely be gone for a month, but we’re thinking we might be gone longer. We don’t have any set plans for how long, which is perfect for us and we hope that Ethan enjoys it, too.

Morning

Ethan and Dong Eun went for a walk down to the beach. Ethan brought his bike and rode at the skatepark for about 40 minutes, until the rain started falling.

They discovered a lot of ladybugs hanging out at the back of the skatepark because there were swarms of aphids on one of the ramps.

After some breakfast, Ethan worked on some multiplication problems. He’s been practicing using a Korean song to remember his times tables, which seems to be working, as it’s a fun way to learn.

Afternoon

He’s been really into making things with paper, such as origami or using cardboard to make things. Today, he added some upgrades to the marble maze he made recently. He didn’t want the marble to simply fall through the holes in the maze and land on the floor, so he added a bottom and a way for the marble to come out the front of the maze.

He noticed that he still had to catch the marble when it came out, so he later added a small tray where the marble comes out to catch it.

He also spent some time watching more videos about origami, although he didn’t try to make anything today.

Afterwards, he read a book on his Kindle which was not a comic book!

Evening

He tried an experiment to capture hot air by placing a small mason jar over a fresh out-of-the-pot steamed potato.

After dinner, he started making a playhouse from the large sheet of cardboard we got the other day. He’s been cutting out pieces of the cardboard to make other things, such as the marble maze, but tonight he decided to make something bigger.

He finished writing his daily observation and decided to cut his own hair again!
