Roadschooling is quite different from what we’ve been getting ourselves used to at home. It’s taken us a couple of days and we’re still in the province. Ethan has been great about spending time in the van, as we’ve taken more breaks along our route. We’re still sorting out the balance between driving and having time to play and learn. But at least we went to the library today.

Morning

We woke up quite early and Ethan started working on the Sudoku puzzles again. Didn’t realize he enjoyed them so much.

We left the Walmart parking lot where we spent the night and headed towards Hell’s Gate. We thought it would be cool to see the power of the river get squeezed into a narrow point. However, we didn’t end up staying for long, and we didn’t see the rushing water. We really just wanted to find a bathroom and the bathrooms at Hell’s Gate require you to take a $22 tram ride. We figured we’re going to see Niagara Falls at some point on this trip so what’s a little narrow river passing, right?

Ethan spent most of the drive listening to the Wow in the World science podcast. I highly recommend it, as it’s engaging, entertaining and educational. Ethan can listen and re-listen to episodes all day long.

Afternoon

We stopped at the location of the final rail spike that connected the Canadian National Railway with the west. It was a great spot to watch the mega-long freight trains go by and carve a stick we brought with us from home.

We then headed to Kamloops and Ethan spent time playing at Riverside Park. When were here last time, it was much warmer, but it also rained. Fun place, though.

After the park, we headed to the library, a place that Ethan loves to visit. He likes reading just about anything and a new library is always a great place to discover some new books.

Evening

We had a delicious cod and vegetable soup for dinner and headed back into the library. It closes at 9 so I’m frantically typing this and hoping to get my video edited and uploaded before closing.

Unschooling on the road does seem somewhat easier than if we were following a curriculum and had to do certain subjects each day. That being said, it’s in the back of our minds that we should find educational experiences for Ethan. Right now, we’re enjoying the experience of traveling together and taking each moment as it comes.

Today’s Costs
