Being on the road as a family and unschooling is fun and for a bit of a challenge. The nice thing is that unschooling allows us the freedom to learn as it happens.

We’re not worried about Ethan “learning” something everyday. We’re mainly trying to think of experiences he can have. For example, living in a VW Westfalia camper van means learning to cope with the small space and close proximity to each other. It’s also about making do with less and enjoying the moment, something we value as a family.

Video is coming. Golden’s library internet upload speeds were way too slow for uploading, but it was still awesome to have free internet to write this post.

Update 9/22 – Finally got the video uploaded using the casino wifi (I’ll explain in tomorrow’s post).

Morning

We spent the night at a truck stop near Kamloops, BC, which ended up being the perfect location because it was quiet and the gas station bathroom was open 24 hours. As soon as he got up, Ethan was back at the Sudoku. He has always liked riddles and puzzles, like the Rubik’s Cube, so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. He is also into a bit of coding using the Scratch program from MIT, so perhaps Sudoku is similar.

Once we left Kamloops, our next destination was Revelstoke to refuel and have a look at the historic downtown. The pictures of the downtown area looked inviting and it was a lovely place to see in person. But with Ethan feeling a bit under the weather and the downtown a lot smaller than expected, we decided it was better to drive through and find a playground, instead.

Afternoon

After Revelstoke, our next stop was Golden, which is just before you hit the Canadian Rockies. But this proved quite the challenge to get there because there was a lot of road work along the way. Amazingly, Ethan was very patient and didn’t have much of a problem with the delay. Maybe this is a side effect of traveling in the van?

When we finally reached Golden, we headed straight for the local library. As I’ve mentioned previously, Ethan loves the library. Here, he rediscovered the Encyclopedia Brown books that he used to so love. I recorded quite a few of them for him to listen to on his iPod.

We used to record the book we read to him and put them all onto the iPod. It was a great way to keep him engaged and it helped with his reading skills when he would read the book and listen to the audio we recorded.

Evening

The library closed at 8pm so we stayed until closing. Ethan spent some time on the computer watching TedEd videos and reading. I was at the other side of the library plugged into an outlet so I didn’t see all the books he read. But considering he was still getting a new book when we had to go, I wasn’t too worried.
