This was an unusual day because we spent most of it at Southland VW in Medicine Hat. We were going to head towards Regina, SK, but because of the issues Juju Jr. was having, we needed to find out what was going on with him first. But it doesn’t mean there wasn’t any learning during this day of roadschooling with Ethan.

For Ethan, I feel like he’s learning a lot from observing how we are handling situations that arise during the road trip. He’s always been easy to adapt to new environments, and this roadschooling journey has shown us that he’s happy just enjoying the moment.

On a side note, Southland VW was amazing to deal with. They got us in on the same day, even though we called on a Monday morning. They were kind, helpful and even gave us 6 months of free VW roadside assistance that offers free towing to a nearby VW dealer. We were extremely grateful for their help.

Morning

Shortly after having breakfast, Ethan went outside and made a new video about an origami design he created. He hadn’t made a video on this trip until now, so perhaps this will spark his creativity.

We left early to drive to a local mechanic in Medicine Hat that had a good reputation and experience fixing VW Westfalia camper vans. Unfortunately, he was too busy to see us and said that if he needed parts, they would take 4 days to come from… Vancouver! A big lesson we learned is that we should always get the van checked before and after a road trip to catch any issues.

So we decided to call the local VW dealer and luckily, they fit us in. But we would have to wait until 3pm, so we headed over and waited at the dealership.

Afternoon

We had lunch in the van while we waited and it was actually quite a relaxing time. This was one of those moments where we just take what is given and make the best of it. It’s a lesson we hope Ethan will learn during this road trip.

Dong Eun thought it would be good to go for a walk with Ethan, so he’d get some exercise. There was a Value Village not far from the dealership so off they went. Ethan is always looking for things to examine and learn about. Going for a walk with him usually takes longer than expected because he constantly stops when he sees something interesting.

Back at the dealership, Ethan found the comics section of the newspaper and read that. He then settled in to reading books on his Kindle. We’re so thankful for the science podcasts and the Kindle!

When Juju Jr. was finally ready, we were relieved to find out he was safe to drive and just needed a new CV boot and front crank seal. The dealer didn’t have those parts in and it would take them 2-3 days to get them, so we decided to move on and find the parts and service elsewhere. Like I said at the beginning of this post, Southland VW was amazing. They only charged for the service tech’s time and his help was invaluable.

Evening

We reached Swift Current after dinner time and quickly got some food ready.

After dinner, Ethan wrote a poem about trees. We’re not sure what inspired him, but anytime he wants to write is a good thing. He likes writing, but he doesn’t like answering questions in workbooks.

Ethan always seems to find something to keep himself occupied, especially during this trip with origami. He made some new designs and wanted to make a video about them. It was late so he had to wait until the next morning.

So today was
