It was great getting Juju Jr. out of Alberta without any serious issues. While roadschooling, we’re learning to enjoy the little victories and to be grateful for the kindness of people we meet and for Walmart letting people free camp! πŸ™‚

Juju Jr. has been amazing and we’re thankful for his ability to keep on going. We do need to get him in for service but he’s proven that long distance traveling in a Westfalia is for sure possible and a lot of fun. We’re only going 100km/h to save gas, but we’re also enjoying the slower pace…and lower interior noise!

Our destination today was Regina, Saskatchewan with a stop to see Mac the Moose in Moose Jaw, SK, the biggest moose in N. America.

Morning

The theme for the week seems to be origami, as Ethan has been folding his own designs almost every day. And he seems to wake up with new ideas to try.

He’s also been filming how to videos in some unlikely places, such as the walkway outside of the Walmart we stayed at in Swift Current, SK.

The drive to Moose Jaw along the Trans Canada took us by Reed Lake, a great spot for bird lovers and a nice little break from driving. It doesn’t smell nice up close, but it’s worth a visit.

Ethan found a moth and a grasshopper, so he was quite happy to just play while we took in the sights. You’d never believe this place is right next to the Trans Canada Hwy.

We made it to Moose Jaw and spent some time with Mac the Moose and at the incredibly nice tourist information centre. Ethan promptly made another origami how to video while Dong Eun prepared lunch and I got some work done. Free wifi is always a time to catch up on emails and work.

Afternoon

Now it was time to get to Regina. We wanted to have Juju Jr. serviced in Regina but the Westfalia specialist was overbooked and couldn’t fit us in. So we’ll have to wait until we get to Winnipeg.

We wanted to visit the library in downtown Regina because it’s open until 9pm but the metered parking turned us away. We’re trying to not spend money when we can find a free option. It’s not so much about being cheap but just being more creative. In this case, we were led to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and Wascana Park.

The museum didn’t have any exhibits Ethan would have found interesting, so we headed for the park. Wow! The park is beautiful and was so worth the visit.

We played there for about an hour and headed to a different library before they closed. I worked and Ethan spent some time watching how to videos about origami while Dong Eun cooked some rice to get ready for dinner.

Ethan played grounders with some of the local kids at the playground outside the library. I’ve said it before, but it surprises us every time we see him approach new kids and just easily start playing with them. Maybe it’s because he’s an only child? Anyway, he had a blast at the playground.

Evening

We went to our usual camping spot, a local Walmart, and settled in for the night. I didn’t get a shot of the sunset, but prairie sunsets are spectacular. Ethan worked on more origami before and after dinner.

He’s also been very helpful in getting water for the van and it’s nice having him pitch in with little tasks. He’s not always up for it, but he’s sincere about helping out. It might also be to score brownie points to use the computer.
