Here’s the end of April and into May…already! Be prepared for a lot of origami.
April 28

Another beautiful morning. Time for a jog along the beach.

We went shopping at Costco and Ethan brought along origami paper.
This is the design that compresses and opens. It can be made into a tube, among other things.
Back home, Ethan continued practicing the same design while watching his favourite origami YouTuber, Jeremy Shafer.

He followed Jeremy’s instructions and made this 3D ninja star.

Here is the original design Ethan was working on.

We went out for a walk and to get a drink and Ethan folded origami while walking to the coffee shop.
He had a hot chocolate and he did origami.
This is a smaller version of the design he’s been making.

Oh look! He’s not doing origami! The water fountain in front of Whole Foods is now on so he spent some time building dams with his hands and arms.
On the way home, Ethan grabbed a reed and had lots of fun with it. He is always able to find something to entertain himself.
He saw this patch of dandelions and had to stop to pick some.
In the next moment after this, he shook the dandelions like crazy.
Using his reed as a handy pointer.
Back home, Ethan made a video teaching people how to make origami.
Then he learned more origami.
He made a star and a moon.
This is a better perspective.
While having dinner, Ethan mentioned some interesting facts about atoms and elements in our environment and in us!

That was pretty much it for Sunday.
April 29

Monday morning and it’s glorious out! Time to go jogging along the beach and trying to find broken glass.

We stayed home for a short time then went out to meet a friend of mine.
My friend Ricardo has an almost 6 year old son and Ethan offered to push him on the swing while Ricardo and I talked.
Ethan wanted me to take a Pano photo for him.
Back home, Ethan started doing his own work, such as calculating sales tax and discounts.
All the while, his hands are busy folding origami.

He did some math about gratuity and commissions.

We then walked to Whole Foods to buy a roast chicken and of course, Ethan brought origami paper.
He wanted another reed on the way home.

He did an article about measles and did an exercise using homographs.
Cute drawing in his math book.
This is like a blow dart made from origami paper.
He watched some videos about science and found this one from the BBC. The episode was about what happens when fluorine gas contacts a lump of coal.

That’s fluorine gas making contact with BBQ briquettes.
Another test to see what happens when fluorine gas is put in contact with another volatile gas,
Pretty!
April 30

This is a video that Ethan is working on.
The turtle is animated. It moved around the screen drawing the black lines. Then the red line appears.
Ethan learned to make a flying fish flicker. It’s an origami fish that you can make fly by flicking it.
Yellow flowers that Ethan collected yesterday for Dong Eun.
After dinner, we went out for a walk along the beach. Ethan was anxious to come home because he was allowed to play Prodigy Math after getting a perfect score on his musical notation homework.
The beach was beautiful.

Ethan found this huge tree branch.
He used the branch to draw a big track in the sand that I had to follow.
He played Prodigy Math when he got home, of course.
May 1

Off to nature school with his friends Luca and Kal. They’ve been working on carving wooden spoons lately.
After nature school, Luca’s mom took the boys out for ice cream and to play with their dog, which Ethan really enjoyed. Once Ethan got back home, he got back to work on the video he’s been working on.

He watched a video about how sulphur reacts with ice because he was making an element card for sulphur.
He practiced the violin.
After dinner, we all went for a walk along the beach.

Ethan started drawing in the sand.

lol

We found this tiny sea star.
May 2

Today, Ethan did some more work on percentages.

We listened to Mozart as we had lunch. Ethan had swimming class today, too. It was his first time back in a year and he did great. He worked hard, even though his new goggles were leaking and he almost threw up because he drank pool water. Not sure why he still drinks the water!
Ethan practiced his typing, something he hasn’t done in a while.

Playing with origami before we went out for a walk to get ice cream.
He loves playing with dandelions.
They’re not safe from him, though! He likes to run and kick them. Some he blew while walking and would end up with seeds in his mouth!
May 3

We went for a jog in the morning and stopped at the lookout point.
After a very yummy breakfast, Ethan began his day by working on his typing.
Next, he made an element card for aluminum and its uses. He explained why the pronunciation is different, something about when ??????????

He worked an origami flasher tessellation.

This turned into four flashers made from one piece of paper.

There’s a baby inside!
We went out for a walk after dinner and Ethan did origami almost the entire time.

We went to the grocery store to buy some snacks and Ethan found a new edition of his favourite supermarket publication, Coffee Time.
After we got home, we watched Pick of the Litter. Ethan wanted to watch something else but I won the rock-paper-scissors match 2-1. He ended up loving the documentary.
May 4

Ethan wasn’t feeling too good today. He caught a bit of a cold maybe on Thursday or Friday so we decided to go out for something warm and nourishing for lunch.
We went to Wooden Fish, the still somewhat new Vietnamese place nearby.
This hit the spot for Ethan. Even though he was a bit sick, he ate a lot because he loves these noodles.
That night, Dong Eun wanted Ethan to organize his origami because it was just piled in a heap along the window ledge. Dong Eun came up with the idea to hang Ethan’s favourite origami to display them.
Ethan helping out with hanging the origami.
And that was Ethan’s week of unschooling. A lot more time spent outside with the increasingly beautiful weather. It’s great that Ethan can enjoy the outdoors without the pressure of having to be in a traditional classroom.
