This week was pretty exciting because I went in for the NVOL math Unit 1-6 midterm test! I don’t know my score yet though… Other than that, I finished (and marked) the SIA for Unit 7, and I worked on Science NVOL Unit 2! I also got the Suzuki Violin Book 5, because I’ve almost finished Suzuki Violin Book 4. I’m really excited about that!

I also had violin class on Tuesday, taekwondo Monday to Thursday, swimming on Friday, and taekwondo leadership and orchestra rehearsal on Saturday.

Also, I got to go to a “business” dinner on Saturday. It was a taekwondo leadership dinner, and it was really fun because we got to go to a Korean restaurant and talk and have fun together with friends.

LC Response

Hi Ethan,

Happy new year! I hope you had a great winter break!

Congratulations on writing your first formal midterm exam. Did writing it feel much different to writing a smaller test? I’m glad you continue to be excited about making good progress in your NVOL math and science. I love your immune system essay and had a great time reading it! Thank you for sharing it. You’ve made a very complex topic easy to understand through very clear descriptions put in layperson terms, and used some great examples and analogies. I bet that researching and writing it helped you find a deeper appreciation for your immune system too, just like you hoped the reader did in your conclusion. How did the actual writing of the essay help you build/refine your understanding of the topic, as opposed to simply watching/reading the resources you used?

Completing Suzuki Violin Book 4 and starting 5 sounds like a very impressive accomplishment, and I’m glad you’re excited to be continuing to challenge yourself and advance your skills. I’d love to hear about something in violin you feel you’ve become very skilled at over the last few months. What comes after finishing book 5 and moving away from Suzuki?

The business dinner for taekwondo leadership sounds like a lot of fun, and also a great way to celebrate building leadership skills. Did you do a lot of talk about teaching/helping in taekwondo? If you did, I’d be interested to hear what you shared with others about your experiences, and what you learned from listening to the others there.

Thank you for sharing your answers to the winter activity. I did some listening to Vivaldi’s Winter too — it’s a good one for the winter solstice! I’m sure you have a heightened appreciation for it because of your background in violin.

I love the idea of making pop-up cards; those are so much fun. Toilet paper tube crafts are also always fun.

I hope your cross-country skiing and snowshoeing were wonderful. I’d love to hear more about your experiences doing those things… what you saw outside, what the movement felt like… I hear there is supposed to be a lot more snow still coming; I wonder what you’ll be doing in the snow this week! I absolutely love the idea of watching the sun come up on Jan. 1; did you wind up doing that? What was it like?

I wish you well with your healthy-eating goal (maybe the Healthy Eating and Nutrition topic in the Learning Experience Library has resources or inspiration you’d like), and I wish you a happy and healthy 2022.

Thank you for your Observing for Learning.

Best,

Shannon
