This week wasn’t that eventful, but I was able to finish the Unit 7 NVOL Send-in Assignment for math. And I started writing about the immune system for science 8 NVOL, where I have to study one subject in biology, and I chose the immune system. The science activity is called the “Inquiry Project.” Also, on Sunday, I got to perform at a concert! I’m part of the WVYB Youth Symphony Orchestra, so I got to participate in that. If you want a recording of the concert, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ-c1KT0oCE

I started (and finished) the Send-In Assignment for Unit 7 Math NVOL! It was about algebra and solving equations.
I learned about the floods in BC and did some questions on WITW. I learned about the devastating consequences and what happened to people who were trapped between mudslides.
I made a box-moving shooter game this week! It’s a puzzle game, and I’m still developing.
I also polished up my classic platformer game.
I also started the Inquiry Project…
…About the immune system! I plan to finish by next week. I wrote about how the immune system works, and I wrote about one of the important players in the immune system, the complement system.
I worked on Unit 7 for NVOL. It was about algebra, just like the SIA (hmm, what a coincidence).
And I finished the December article for Science News. It was about Mayan structures, robots, and elephants!

LC Response

Hi Ethan,

Thank you for sharing the video of your orchestra’s performance! I thought the strings sounded great! (The percussion on the helmets part was very entertaining too.)  I’m really glad you have the opportunity to participate in something like this. Playing trumpet in my middle school and high school bands was a great part of my own school experience and I think it’s very valuable to be part of a group working together like that. Performing in a concert sure sounds like it makes for an eventful week. What qualifies a week as eventful for you in your opinion?

The skills you learn in the algebra and linear equations part of math will come up continuously in math in future years. What is your favourite part of the grade 8 math so far?

It’s great you’re learning a bit about the devastation caused by the recent flooding. I bet you’re picking up some incidental learning about geography, economics, and infrastructure while you’re following current events like this. I hope all your family and friends in BC were safe from natural disasters this year.

Your game making sounds very interesting. Computer science is one area where I feel I don’t have sufficient background to accurately judge how complex the tasks you’re working on are, but everything you’re sharing sounds impressive. Which of the games or coding projects that you’ve worked on so far this year do you feel is the most challenging, and what are you most proud of?

I love the idea of doing an inquiry-based research project in science. The immune system is about as challenging a topic as is possible to pick for a biology inquiry since even an introductory-level overview of it is still quite complex, but it’s also an awe-inspiring, eye-opening, and highly relevant topic to investigate! I look forward to reading your project when it’s done, or also the drafts along the way. I also look forward to hearing about your research process of how you find information and turn it into a written presentation.

It’s neat you’re following Science News as well. There’s always something amazing to learn. I don’t often get the chance to listen, but when I do I like listening to Quirks and Quarks on CBC Radio. The host interviews scientists about their recent research in all sorts of fascinating topics, and I find it interesting to listen to the scientists explain their research to a general audience in their own words.

Thank you for your Observing for Learning.

Best,

Shannon
