Ethan was still sick today but was in much better condition than the day before. Today, Ethan mostly spent the day in bed watching educational programs on Discovery Education and BrainPop, plus doing some math on Dream Box.

Checking his temperature has become a routine from the time he wakes up. He’s learned some things about drinking lots of fluids, having food rich in Vitamin C and using cold compresses on his forehead.

Dong Eun made some fresh apple, carrot and orange juice with a bit of ginger in it, along with some daikon. Daikon is supposed to be good as a decongestant and has antibacterial and anti-viral properties.

It’s also loaded with vitamins, so it was a great addition to the juice. Daikon does add some bitterness but it works very well.

Online learning

Like yesterday, Ethan spent the day watching and learning. Here, he watched a video about the healing properties of honey.

And he followed that up with some videos about how the universe was formed by dust particles clumping together to eventually form planets. Pretty amazing.

These types of videos give great talking points for Ethan because he loves to share what he’s learned.

Dong Eun spent the morning getting brownies and banana muffins ready for the week.

With Ethan doing different activities, it’s nice to have healthy, homemade snacks, so we really appreciate the time and love she puts into making this stuff for us.

Back in bed

Since Ethan’s been holed up in bed most of the time, we’re finding that there are many excellent educational materials available to us via SelfDesign’s subscriptions.

This is great for Ethan as an unschooler, as it allows Ethan to explore topics of interest, as well as being high quality.

For example, Ethan was watching a BrainPop video about solving the volume of a cylinder.

He was getting a little warm so we soaked his feet in warm water to draw some of the heat down and to try to get him to sweat. It seemed to work, as his temperature began to lower.

Not sure what happened here, but Ethan suddenly printed out a meal plan picture. This is kind of what we do for food nowadays, but we don’t eat much dairy, except for some butter.

By the end of the day, Ethan’s temperature had come down quite a lot and it looks like he’ll be ok by tomorrow.

He did a great job fighting this infection/cold and only took Advil twice, both times at night before going to bed. However, he didn’t need it tonight because he was doing so much better.

Even though Ethan caught some sort of bug, being a homeschooler meant not worrying about missing time at school and catching up. It also didn’t disrupt our schedule because it was like a normal day in our unschooling life.

What about you? If you’re an unschooler/homeschooler, what are your days like when your child is sick? I don’t usually ask for comments, but if you’re reading this, we’d love to hear your thoughts.
