Enjoying summer as an unschooler. Ethan has a reduced schedule that he set up for summer that mostly involves math and reading. Here’s what he did this week.
July 7

Out for a morning jog.
Ethan created a multiplication modulo 12 table. Modulo multiplication is figuring out clock time.
He then wanted to make a larger version of the table.

Here are instructions for how to clock multiply.

And a chart with subset data.

Explaining clock multiplication.
Inventing a new way to play pool.
Then taking leap into the pool.
He wanted to see how long he could balance. His record was 56.36 seconds.
A reminder to be totally ready before taking the EMF course test.
Counting down to when his auntie arrives from Korea.
July 8

Ethan’s been swimming in our pool on the days he doesn’t have swimming lessons.
Helping to clean up after his swim.

Origami.

That’s a Korean boy Ethan befriended. He has an older brother who went home early.

July 12

Morning jog.

Building a solar device.
He made the solar fan and it worked!
He wanted to sort the puzzle pieces to put the puzzle together later.
July 13

Morning jog. I wanted to show Ethan how changing the angle of the camera can create a different perspective. In this case, we can make Ethan look much bigger.
Or make hime look much smaller.
He couldn’t figure out what this was that he found. Turned out to be dried up piece of apple skin.
He worked on counting subsets on EMF.
He then wanted to play with his snap circuits set.
He found a unique way to draw patterns on the spinning discs.
He turned on the motor, then he would touch the disk with a marker.

We learned what µF stands for on a capacitor from the Snap Circuits set: Microfarad

Nico and Paulo came over and they had a blast.
