Here’s what happened with Ethan during the first week of July 2019. Even though it’s summer vacation, Ethan is still unschooling. We’ve allowed him to relax his schedule so we’ll see how that goes.
June 30

Morning math practice with EMF, slicing a parallelogram to create a rectangle.
Sorting the shapes into the correct section. The EMF courses are based on logic, rather than traditional ways of teaching math.

Going to Granville Island to meet up with Charles’ family.
We planned for the kids to play in the water park but they found other things to do, like seeing if the turtle could be caught with a branch. No, it didn’t work.

Waiting for fish and chips with Avalon.

Throwing rocks into the water and just have a great time with each other.

We went up to the lookout point on Cypress. The kids had chocolate milk.

Then it was down to John Larson Park to play before we all headed to our place for dinner.
July 1

Canada Day. Brought out the kayak for the first time in 2019.
Heading out to check out the Canada Day activities at John Larson Park.

Bringing his journal up to watch the fireworks. He kept an up-to-the-minute log of what was happening before and during the fireworks.
Happy Canada Day!
July 2

Morning reading.
Practiced violin.
Working on EMF.
Updated list of stuff to do over summer holidays.
An experiment to keep a piece of paper dry.
Very interested in the experiments in this book.
July 3

Ethan spent about 4 hours playing outside. That seemed enough.
A big talk about behaviour, attitude and respect.
July 4

Practicing math with EMF.

Playing Grounders with kids at the playground.

Lots of origami Yodas.
Just free folding.
Swimming lessons. Took the scooter to get to the community centre.
July 5

EMF math practice. Word problems with trains.
Our pool reopened so we invited Kal over to play.

Playing violin with piano accompaniment.
July 6

Learning about subsets on EMF.
They were making math jokes 🙂
Time to sharpen up the geometry and physics skills with some pool.

Out for a walk after dinner.
On the way to the grocery store, we noticed lots of slugs coming out onto the road. Some were already squished from cars so Ethan decided to move them back into the grass.
That was the week. Ethan hasn’t been allowed to use the computer lately and with summer vacation upon us, he’s reduced his studies to math and reading classic books. Unschooling continues all the time and that seems to be the way he likes it.
