June is here and with it, Ethan has finished his school year with SelfDesign. We just received his year end summary from his Learning Consultant and it was nice to read a recap of Ethan’s activities and achievements. He has accomplished so much this past school year and reading the summary reaffirmed our decision to homeschool Ethan.
Perhaps we’re lucky in that Ethan is relatively self-sufficient when it comes to exploring his learning. But I still feel that any child can thrive in this type of unschooling environment. It’s not always easy and there are certainly times when there’s conflict between child and parents. However, all of it seems worth it when we read someone else’s words describing what Ethan has been able to do and who he is.
With that, here is what Ethan was up to this past week.

Practicing some Violin!
Learning what would happen if we detonated a nuclear bomb in the Mariana(s) trench.
Writing about…
What would happen if…
You detonated a bomb in the marianas trench.
Making a video about what if you detonated a bomb in the marianas trench.
Doing a problem on brilliant. this one is about gears.
Carl: Ethan uses Brilliant every day because he wants to complete the 100 day challenge. There is also a section where students ask questions to the community and Ethan has been providing answers whenever he can.
Learning about cryptography on Khan Academy.
Learning about cryptocurrencies in Brilliant.
umm… I have no idea. maybe you should ask my dad.
Carl: I think this was part of the pseudorandom numbers video.
Thinking really hard with a finger on my chin. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…??
Learning about pseudorandom numbers.
Drawing blobs while listening to…
“A Wind In The Door” by Madeline L’eingle.
Doing this on my violin.

Learning about what would happon if we detonated all the Nukes in the world at once. ☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️

WALKING ON THE BEACH 🙂
Carl: This was a hollow log we walked by.
Jumping on the beach.
Carl: Ethan and I tried walking across the beach without touching the ground or sand.
WALKING ON A LOG.
Umm… I DIDN’T MAKE THIS! (Dad…)
Carl: Just a nice little design I came across.
Starting a new bridge.

Doing some EMF.
Some modular arithamitic.
Making and finishing my video about what would happen if we detonated A BOMB IN THE MARIANAS TRENCH.
Writing about the thing where we detonate all the nuclear bombs in the world. ps: if ☢️ = 100 bombs, we would have: ☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️☢️. 15,000 bombs in the world!

Learning about the Bacteriophage. (LOOK IT UP)
This is a… can you guess? This is an Enigma machine from World War 2! It’s made out of paper.
Writing about cyphers.
Doing a lot of EMF today.
Carl: When Ethan used to practice the EMF problems, he wouldn’t pay close attention to what the problems were asking. The result was that he’d receive lower scores on the problems. But lately, he’s been paying careful attention to the questions and also asking for help from the live tutors that are available. As a result, he’s getting higher scores and also really enjoying EMF.

I finished the “waves and light” course in Brilliant!
Learning about the Mandelbrot set.

Learning about the chaos game. SO WEIRD.
Carl: Ethan showed me this chaos game and it demonstrated how if you rolled a dice continuously and plotted the numbers on a piece of paper with three points placed anywhere, you would eventually wind up with this pattern. This was a video from Numberphile. They created a computer simulation to pick the random number because it would take a long time to do this by hand.
Eating sandwiches outside.
Flying my kite for like the first time!
WOW IT GOES SO HIGH
And that was my weeek!
