Last week of October! Here’s what Ethan was up to this past week.

We wanted to encourage Ethan to jog more often and more regularly so we allowed him to use a running app that we installed on an old iPhone. It definitely helped motivate Ethan to jog more. Ethan used the route mapping feature to write words and ended up going out for much longer runs because it was now more fun.

Here’s more from Ethan about this past week:

Yep! It’s me! This week, I went jogging A LOT, and wrote words using the mapping software! I also took violin and taekwondo classes, and I passed level 10 in swimming! These days, I’m doing EMF and Brilliant EVERY DAY, and I’m doing percentages in EMF! I also made a video about polar coordinates because I learned about polar coordinates, and I wanted to make a video! These days, I’m taking extra taekwondo classes because one of my teachers recommended it!

The riddle 1=2

Ok Ethan,

Here is my next guess for the 1=2

I think the mistake is in step 1

assume that a=b are two different numbers there is no way they are equal

so the premise of the proof is flawed?

so 1 could not equal 2

Am I on the right track?

LC Response

I bet he was more motivated to jog. I had a fit bit watch for about a month and found myself so motivated to make my number of steps go up. Unfortunately, I dove into the lake with it and it wasn’t waterproof, luckily I got it second hand for $20…

Here’s more from Ethan about this past week:

Yep! It’s me! This week, I went jogging A LOT, and wrote words using the mapping software! I also took violin and taekwondo classes, and I passed level 10 in swimming! Congratulations on passing level 10!! Did you have to retake the course or just the test. Sometimes it takes a few more tires to pass, way to stick with it. These days, I’m doing EMF and Brilliant EVERY DAY, and I’m doing percentages in EMF! I also made a video about polar coordinates because I learned about polar coordinates, and I wanted to make a video! Well I don’t think I qualify to watch it, since i don’t have the background knowledge. I really appreciate how you give these sorts of disclaimers, they are also pretty funny. These days, I’m taking extra taekwondo classes because one of my teachers recommended it! Good for you, getting lots of physical activity. I always say healthy body, healthy mind, healthy spirit.

And a lot of Brilliant! (this was about liquids and number theory) This week, I did a lot of EMF… (this was about percentages)

  • This week, I wrote that the Earth and Moon might have once shared a Magnetosphere! A Magnetosphere is a scientist – invented word which nobody can pronounce (or spell) ! (Mahg – NET – o – spuh – ear ) (it means “magnetic field”) (mahg – NET – ik feeld)

This is an awesome synthesis and write up . I didn’t learn that the earth and moon were once one entity until 2015!! You are way ahead of me. What is so incredible is how influential the moon is on life and gravity on earth. So cool!

So Ethan I have to admit that it is 28 years since I did algebra and I do not use it in my everyday life. I so appreciate you typing the proof out so that I could clearly read it…I want to play along, it is a challenge for me. I am pretty much guessing and using my intuition but I think the error is in step 8 or 9??

I am going to be honest Ethan, I guess I am not that fun or knowledgeable when it comes to algebra and proofs. I loved them when I was in grade 6-8…I I so appreciate how you are engaging with me and I wish I was better able to play along….I am great at geography questions and I promise not to look it up on google so you can try that. Here is a fun one you can play where they show you photos from the world and you try to guess the countfrom: https://www.geoguessr.com/

Here is a “Proof” that 1 = 2… see if you       can spot the mistake!

  • I learned about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I’m planning on doing this as the next slide for my WW2 project in Scratch.

So are you writing code which maps out the bombing of pearl harbor? That is what it looks like to me.

Also after this country study are there new countries you are hoping to visit someday.

How has the project opened your eyes to the larger world?

Has this project gotten you interested in linguistics at all:

Of the estimated 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, linguists say, nearly half are in danger of extinction and are likely to disappear in this century. In fact, they are now falling out of use at a rate of about one every two weeks.

Wade Davis is perhaps the most articulate and influential western advocate for the world’s indigenous cultures. A National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, he has been described as “a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life’s diversity.” Trained in anthropology and botany at Harvard, he travels the globe to live alongside indigenous people, and document their cultural practices in books, photographs, and film. His stunning photographs and evocative stories capture the viewer’s imagination. As a speaker, he parlays that sense of wonder into passionate concern over the rate at which cultures and languages are disappearing — 50 percent of the world’s 7,000 languages, he says, are no longer taught to children. He argues, in the most beautiful terms, that language is much more than vocabulary and grammatical rules. Every language is an old-growth forest of the mind.

What do you think of this quote? I think it is quite profound and beautiful…..
